Weather and Climate

We have four distinct seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall), a mild climate, average annual rainfall of about 14 inches, and more than 300 sunny days per year.  Our air is clear and crisp with low humidity.  During the winter we do get snow both in town and the foothills and mountain ranges surrounding town, however, in town snow rarely lasts for long, and winter days usually feature clear skies. Spring and summer are also sunny, with typically warm and windy conditions leading into often afternoon thunderstorms by the middle of July which last often to the start of September. Summer nights are cool, so be sure to bring a jacket or shawl to enjoy strolls at night. During fall, the aspen and cottonwood trees in the surrounding areas turn gold as air temperatures turn cooler.

Santa fe is located at the foothills of the the southern end of the Rocky Mountains at approximately 7,000 feet.  The nearby mountain range reaches above 12,000 feet.  Due to the elevation, it is important to remember that it may take a day or two to acclimatize, and it is very important to drink water throughout the day – drink more than you think you need.  Finally – bring your sunscreen, as the risk of sunburn is possible anytime during the year.
